Packing & Storage Tips

 

Do:

1. Utilize all the space in your unit.
2. Make a plan as to how you are going to arrange your items.
3. Use freestanding shelves to help organize your unit.
4. Always put the heavier boxes on the bottom and the lighter ones on top of the heavier ones. This will prevent boxes from being crushed.
5. Be sure to store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
6. To protect your items cover them with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets.
7. Very important: maintain your unit by sweeping & checking it at least once a month.
8. If it is possible store couches on end.
9. When stacking furniture use paper pads in between the items to avoid scratching.
10. Wrap mattress using a zippered cover or sheets/cotton for protection.
11. Never use cardboard boxes for long-term storage they are better for moving. Plastic or Rubbermaid-style containers are great for storing your items because they stack easily and have breathable, tight-fitting lids.
12. Keep out of season clothes accessible, you may have your belongings in storage longer than anticipated.

Don’t:

1. Do not use plastic to cover your belongings. It retains moisture.
2. Do not store any food items. This will prevent any unwanted guests.
3. Do not store any toxins or flammables such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
4. Do not forget to lock your storage unit securely before leaving the facility.
